Marina Camargo’s work is anchored around ongoing investigations that materialize in drawings, installations, sculptures, and videos.

Camargo explores a notion of displacement in her work, either as a physical or a conceptual displacement. The idea of shifting perception beyond codes and conventions is present in her artistic practice to provoke disturbances in an established order.

The relationship with spaces and places is fundamental to the artist’s thought, being defined as much by the dimension of lived experience as through its representation: memory, migration, elements of material culture (found images, archives), the historical aspect of the landscape, the constructed nature/naturalization of artificial landscapes, are some of the themes that permeate Marina Camargo’s research.

The maps, recurrent in her artistic practice, also indicate a direct relationship with spaces and places. A kind of translation is involved in the mapping when a three-dimensional space is transformed into a two-dimensional representation. In this translation, a series of choices, distortions, and deletions occur that reveal the presence of power mechanisms. With her artwork, Marina alters not only the shape of continents and borders but mainly provokes disturbances in these established narratives.

Marina Camargo was born in Maceió (Brazil, 1980) and lives in Berlin (Germany). She has a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Visual Arts from the Instituto de Artes in Porto Alegre (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, Brazil). Since the early years, an expanded notion of drawing marked her research. Image and thought are mutually constituted, thus structuring the process of artistic work itself. Cartographic issues began to interest her when she studied in Barcelona (Visual Culture at the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain). Since then, the sense of physical displacement has become recurrent in her work.

In 2010, Camargo was granted a DAAD scholarship to study with with Peter Kogler at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich (Germany), where she later received her Diplom. Exploring different landscape perspectives and representations of places was a central part of her research during these years.

Her works are part of the collections of Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), MARGS (Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul), Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP), MAC-RS (Museum of Contemporary Art – Rio Grande do Sul), Museu de Arte Moderna Aloisio Magalhães (MAMAM), Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana, among others.
